Well, if you are Facebook friends with me, you probably know that we did not make it to Costa Rica. Sucks, I know! Long story short, we were flying stand-by and it took me 7 tries to get from Memphis to Atlanta...crazy, right?! By the time I made it to Atlanta, the flight to Costa Rica had already left. Joe and I ended up getting a cheap hotel room in Atlanta and then tried to get a flight to Costa Rica in the morning. Well....that didn't work and it didn't work again with the later flight. We were not too excited about spending another night in Atlanta and missing another day of your trip, so we decided to switch gears and head somewhere else. We basically looked up on the boards and made a list of all the places we would like to go. We made pro's and con's for each and then we checked to see which planes had open seats...Charleston won! So we caught an evening flight to Charleston and stayed near the airport. The next morning we took a cab to the historic district and checked into our hotel, the trusty Hampton Inn.

We were feeling pretty stressed out, but that was nothing shopping couldn't fix. Luckily, King St. was right next to our hotel and had some excellent stores!

Dropping $300 at Urban Outfitters will make anyone feel better...isn't that a sickness....covering up your feelings with shopping....oh well...it worked!!

As soon as we we done, we decided to explore the historic area.

We found a spooky overgrown grave yard....we would later find out a pretty scary story involving this place.

We also found the Charleston Fire Department...

and this cute little statue :)

We also decided that greasy food was next on the agenda with a trip to Five Guys Burgers. I told Joe that I wasn't really in a "burger mood" and would just eat fries. We ordered the regular size fries and it was HUGE!!!

YUMMY!!!

We found some neat buildings,

historic monuments,

and a beautiful bridge!

In the evening we took a Haunted Jail Tour. This is the outside of the jail (that is currently used as a college for the building arts....ironwood, woodwork, stone work, etc.).

This is the original cart that they used to cart criminals in.

As a punishment, they would put the criminals wrists in these loops and make them stand for hours. Yikes!!

We did not experience anything super spooky, but it felt like someone was following us the whole time.

This jail also held the first female serial killer in the US. This is a reproduction of the cage they kept her in.

We had dinner at The Charleston Crab House....boiled shrimp for me and crab cakes for Joe. Yummy, yummy, in the tummy!!

Joe with his new wallet from Urban Outfitters.

We were supposed to take a Ghosts and Graveyards Tour later, but as the tour started, I could tell that I did not like our guide. She was crazy and told too much history and not enough ghost stories. Joe and I literally snuck out of the tour and ran back to the tour offices. We asked them if we could do the tour again tomorrow night with a different guide. They said yes, so that's what we did. Day 2 coming soon :)
